Good week, missing snow, packages came.

Mr. Potato Snowman
aka...Idaho African Snowman

Hello! This week has been a good week, but I am missing snow after looking at all the pictures of it. IT Doesn't seem like it is winter or close to it.

Anyways...on Tuesday, we had a good day. We taught a few new investigators that are really awesome. Really looking forward to continue teaching them.

On Wednesday.....we had to wake up early to take Elder WIlson to the Airport for MLC in Uganda. Then we headed back home and squeezed out as much sleep before 6:30 as we could. ha.Then Me and ELder Myers headed to K2 for the day. It was fun driving and being completely in charge of the area for a couple days. It was a good day until we found out that we weren't having Thanksgiving dinner with the Leibel's that night. Tough day......

On Thursday I went out with Elder Gondwe for the day. It was a good day, but it is always hard to have very promising people in the Gospel and find that they have problems with some of the commandments. It makes missionary work harder, but that is why it is called work. It isn't always going to be smooth or easy. It also makes they day when they overcome that problem and become converted to the Gospel that much sweeter. It also rained really hard for like an hour that day. It made it really hard to teach. We were yelling it seemed like to hear each other. Also there was lightning that struck right next to the house we were in and the loudest and the most fantastic thunder I have ever heard. It was great! Then we picked up Elder Wilson from the Airport and I got 2 packages. Yeah! Thanks Famiy. I especially love the candy. It is the best.

Friday we had a short day becuase the rest of the day we were doing baptism Interviews for all the other branches as well. It is good to see the 3 branches having  success. It is a good time here in Kigali the work is strong.
On Saturday we cleaned the font and got everyting ready for the Baptism on Sunday. Also we got lost and had a tough time finding people's homes this week, but with the spirit we were able to find all the homes. It is hard with me not having a very good memory and Elder WIlson only being here 3 weeks.

On Sunday, we had Peace and Heritier's baptism. Miracle, the other sibling will be next week because of a very important conference she had to attend. It was really awesome. Everything went well. After the Baptism we were invited over for a party/food thing. There were some powerful testimonies shared there and this family Marthe, Kennedy, Anne Mary, Peace, Heritier, and Miracle is very strong and powerful. They are a great family. Lots of great things happening here in K2 branch.

This week I have learned that we need to have confidence not in ourselves, but Our Savior and also the spirit. We can always trust in them. They will always succeed. A couple scriptures that stood out to me this week were D&C 68:6 and Moroni 8:16 They are great scriptures of comfort to me. Anyways thank you for the love and support. You are the best. Love You.
Love Elder Beck

ANSWERS TO MOM'S QUESTIONS:
1. I'm going to stop asking but let me know if you ever get a letter or package from us!
ACTUALLY I DID JUST GET THE TWO PACKAGES THAT YOU SENT. I OPENED ONE, BUT AM SAVING THE CHRISTMAS PACKAGE. SEE ABOVE, HE GOT 2 OF THE 3 PKGS WE HAVE SENT AND HIS DRIVERS LICENSE THAT HE HAD TO GET A NEW COPY BECAUSE IT WAS STOLEN A WEEK BEFORE HE LEFT.  NOW THAT'S A STORY.  HE HAS NOT RECEIVED ANY LETTERS YET.

2. How are you sleeping? how’s the mattress? I'm assuming you are in a twin bed?  Do you use mosquito netting?
I AM SLEEPING WELL. WHEN ELDER EMPEY LEFT I TOOK HIS MATTRESS AND NOW I AM SLEEPING LIKE A BABY.  YES I USE THE MOSQUITO NETTING, BUT I STILL AM SOMEHOW GETTING SOME MOSQUITO BITES.

3. How would you describe the people in Rwanda? THE PEOPLE IN RWANDA....... HMMMMM THAT IS HARD. LET ME THINK ABOUT THAT THIS WEEK.

4.Have had contact with many Muslims?  I (mom) had read about radical Muslims coming into Africa?   MUSLIM'S HERE ARE REALLY BIG. THERE ARE A TON OF MOSQUES. WE TRY TO STAY AWAY FROM MUSLIMS, BUT WE ARE ACTUALLY TEACHING A MUSLIM RIGHT NOW. SHE WANTS TO SWITCH TO CHRISTIANITY, BUT IT IS SOMEHOW PROBLEMATIC WITH HER FAMILY.

5. Dad tells me that the missionary couple in Rwanda is from Blackfoot? If so, that's a small world.  YES MOM, THEY ARE FROM BLACKFOOT

6. How was Thanksgiving dinner?  NO WE DIDN'T GET THANKSGIVING DINNER.  SOMETHING CAME UP. BUT WE WORKED HARD THAT DAY.  YES THE COUPLE IS FROM BLACKFOOT. THANKSGIVING DINNER WAS A NO GO. FOR A COUPLE REASONS, SO IT REALLY HASN'T FELT LIKE THANKSGIVING JUST ANOTHER DAY.

7. It has been fun to look up information about our ancestors online, do the people of Rwanda do genealogy?
GENEOLOGY IS A REALLY COOL THING AND I WISHED I WOULD HAVE GOTTEN MORE INTO IT AND TAKEN ADVANTAGE OF LEARNING ABOUT MY ANCESTORS BEFORE MY MISSION BECAUSE HERE IN RWANDA THERE IS ALMOST NO GENEOLOGY WORK HERE. PEOPLE THEY KNOW THEIR PARENTS, BUT OTHER THAN THAT THEY DON'T KNOW MUCH ABOUT THEIR FAMILIES. IT IS TO BAD, BUT SOMEDAY ALL THOSE PEOPLE WILL HAVE A CHANCE TO HEAR ABOUT THE GOSPEL OF JESUS CHRIST. THE PLAN OF SALVATION IS PERFECT AND IT BRINGS ME JOY AND WHEN I TEACH IT, IT BRINGS JOY TO OTHERS AS WELL. ALSO I AM VERY GRATEFUL THAT WE AS A FAMILY GET TO BE TOGETHER FOREVER. BEING HERE ON A MISSION HAS MAD ME REALIZE HOW MUCH I LOVE YOU GUYS. AND GIVEN ME AN EVEN STRONGER APPRECIATION, JOY, AND TESTIMONY OF THE PLAN OF SALVATION.

8.  What do you love best about being a missionary?
WHAT I LOVE MOST ARE THE PEOPLE. ESPECIALLY THE MEMBERS AND INVESTIGATORS WE HAVE. THEY MAKE ME LAUGH SO MUCH AND THEY HAVE A GREAT TIME WITH EVERYTHING.

OTHER NEWS IN HIS MISSION. The pope came to Uganda with his entourage and guards.  Many of the missionaries got to see this.

Interesting and nice....

Your Clothes Give them to me now!  The Terminator - modest is hottest!
(he found this picture somewhere...funny boy!)

Hello. This week has been interesting and very nice week. On MONDAY, after emailing me and Elder Wilson had FHE at the church with the YSA. We were playing a game and Elder WIlson ended up running and somehow slipped at hurt his ankle. We think it was Heritier (a member that helps us teach a lot) that tackled him. haha. His ankle wasn't too good and it was swollen and Elder WIlson couldn't walk very well.

On TUESDAY....Elder WIlson had to take the day off and rest/ice his ankle so I went out with a member, Heritier, for the day. It was a fun day and Heritier is a funny guy. Also I got to drive for the day. I am getting pretty good at driving in Rwanda. ha.

On WEDNESDAY... Elder Wilson still couldn't walk very well and had to take another day off. So after District Development Meeting. Elder Myers  from K3 and I went to K2 for half the day and his area for the other half of the day. We say a lot of tender mercies that day. One was that when we had an hour of finding time we met a lot of people that were interested in the church and had a lot of potential investigators.(cool!) Another was a referral we received from an investigator!  (yay!)  Also, when we got bounced later in evening the next person we saw and met was a Mama with a good family that was interested in learning about the church!  (wow!) When you get bounced from an appointment, it is for a reason and there is someone that needs you to talk to them or meet them. I saw that first hand on WednesdayOn THURSDAY, Elder WIlson was back and we went out and had a good day.

On FRIDAY, we went and had another good day. On SATURDAY in the morning we had a football match between the missionaries/ ward missionaries and the members. It was really hot at first, but then about halfway it just started pouring rain. It was awesome. Everyone was slipping around and it was tough to actually play, but it was awesome. The missionaries ended up winnning 2-1. That is two wins for the missionaries and 0 for the members since I have been here. On SUNDAY, we had a great Sabbath. We had 58 at church and a lot of investigators showed up again. Alphonse was confirmed and Church was just awesome. I love Sundays. We also had a delicious stew back home and then we were fed by one of the members right after. They fed us Bugali, or something like that. It is where there is this big dough like thing in the middle of the table and everyone grabs some of it and makes it into a ball and then dips it into the sauce/soup in their bowls. It is not bad, but lets just say I would rather have many other foods before I would choose to eat it. ha. K2 branch is doing well and the people are awesome that are in it.
Bugali or playdough?

nummy! nummy!

It has been a really good week. This week I have learned that we need to be unified with others in our lives. Countless times in the Book of Mormon when the people are being righteous, having peace, thriving, etc. it says they are unified and as one. Right when they start becoming divided they become wicked and fall from the teachings of the gospel. We need to be unified as families, friends, members, and as people. Replace contention with LOVE and UNITY. Also I have learned a lot about missionary work this week and how everyone is a missionary and how we need to share this wonderful gospel and message that has blessed our lives so much to others. There is no greater responsibility. ANd in D&C 84:88 it promises us that as we share and teach others He will be on our right and on our left and we will have angels to bear us up. What a great promise. This week I ponderized D&C 121:45. Great Scripture.

We should be having 3 people baptized this week Peace, Miracle, And Heritier. (love those names!) They are siblings and are part of a family that was baptized 6 months ago. It should be a great week ahead. Thanks for the support and the prayers. I see the blessings everyday. Love you.

Answer to Mom's question.....
1. (this might be a math question) So if you had 8 total missionaries in Rwanda with 4 missionaries in your apartment and 3 left Rwanda, where are the other 4 missionaries in rwanda ? Who stayed in rwanda of the 8 that were there?
Curious

ANSWER: 2 stayed in Kigali too, but they are in a different apartment in another part of town. 2 moved in our apartment and Elder Wilson came to be my companion and the Zone Leader.  There are just 6 missionaries here and a senior couple right now. (I think I interpreted this correctly from him....maybe)

First week of long transfer

Hello. It is good to hear from everyone. This week has been a crazy
week. First getting the news on Monday and then everything that
happened after that.

On Tuesday me and Elder Empey said goodbye to everyone and we visited
a ton of people that day. It was actually a sad day and it was
probably worse for Elder Empey. We did get a nice bowl of chips
(fries) which was nice from one of the members. Then on Wednesday we
woke up early and dropped of the 3 Elders and said our goodbyes at 5
in the morning. Then I got to drive back to the apartment. NIce! Then
we slept till 6:30 and went to pick up Elder Wilson from the airport
at 10. Elder Wilson has been out for 17 months, he is really tall, he
is from LA, he can play the piano really well, and he is a good guy.
We had a good first day, but it was weird having to show him around
and tell him where to go and stuff. It is also weird having 3 new
people to live with. It is good with all these Elders, but different
than last transfer. We have Elder Gondwe, Elder Myers, Elder Wilson,
and me.

On Thursday, we had a really good day. We met with a lot of really
good people and we also met this mother and son for the first time. We
invited them to church and them came last week and we went to visit
them this week. They are really cool and they seem really interested
to hear more. I have a feeling they are going to be a really good
family in the church. On Friday we had another good day and we met
with Alphonse who was getting baptized on Sunday. He is a great guy,
but he is really stubborn and has weird questions, but I love him!
Elder Gondwe and Elder Myers are funny as a companionship. They make
me chuckle. Saturday was a pretty normal day, I got lost a little bit
trying to find peoples homes and such, but we made it there
eventually.

Sunday was a really good day. We had a great Sacrament meeting and we
had 62 people at church! Another record for the year. It were some
great talks and I taught gospel principles. I taught about Jesus
Christ's Second coming. It was hard to teach people about something
like this when a lot of them don't have a base knowledge of the
gospel, but it went well. Then after church we had Alphonse's baptism!
It was great. I was so happy to see him get baptized and have the rest
of his family see him get baptized. Hopefully they will follow his
example. He is an awesome person and has a great family. It was an
awesome Sunday.

Overall this was a really good week. It has been hard week, having to
lead the area and have a companion that doesn't know Rwanda at all,
but I have learned so much this week. I think that we learn the most
when we go through tough times or through trials. That is why life
isn't easy. It is because we learn more when we are tested, than when
we are just coasting through life. I have been reading in 3 Nephi this
week and I love reading about the savior's ministry in the Americas.
Lots of things learned. I also know that God prepares people. I have
seen that on my mission so far. I also know that the Book of Mormon is
true and that it is so important. We learn so many important and vital
things from it. Every question about the church/gospel can be answered
by the Book of Mormom. It is amazing. Read from it everyday. It will
bless your life. The internet is really slow and I can't send any
pictures today, but I will make sure to send double the pictures next
week. Love you and thanks for the Emails and prayers. I am truly
blessed right now.

ANSWERS TO MOM'S ???s:

1. I'm in Dallas and met a taxi cab driver from Ethiopia who is now a US citizen speaking English but his native  tongue was oromo and he  knew some amharic. isn't that interesting¿ Hello Mother! It is good to hear from you and that is awesome that you
get to go to Texas. That is cool about the Ethiopian driver.

2. Dr van dyke goes to Kenya to teach his orthodontic skills and has been on an African safari there. Neat huh?    I
didn't know that Van Dyke has been to africa and such. That is cool.
He is a good guy.

3. Did you hear about the  bombings in Paris France?  I didn't hear about the bombing. That is scary and I
am glad no missionaries got hurt. Sounds crazy though.

4. Have you heard anything about Missionaries  that will be speaking  their native language will now be going to the  MTC for 3 weeks instead of 10 - 12 days? That is
interesting about the MTC stay. I haven't hear about that either. It
will be interesting to see what changes with transfers, people going
home, and stuff.

5. Have you gotten any packages or letters yet from us? I haven't gotten any packages or letters yet, but I
will continue to look for them.

6. I know its early to be thinking about Christmas, but we are excited to talk to you. Do you know what the plan is with skyping or calling home? From what I know, I think I will be
skyping from the Leibel's, the senior couple here in Rwanda, but still
not sure
7. Do you need any recipes? I wouldn't mind some recipes, but I don't know for what. I need to get better at cooking. I already have gotten better at
cooking.
8. What are you doing for exercise? For exercise I usually just do whatever. Pushups, dips, use
the machine, ab workouts, and whatever I feel like.
9. Have you gotten the general conference ensign yet? I still haven't
gotten the Liahona for conference yet, but I really want it.

Thanks
for the letter Mom. Love you.

Last week of Transfer and Crazy news!

Hanging loose in Rwanda....hair cut week....(not sure they know what to do with red white boy hair but who cares, he looks so happy :) )

Hello! I love those pictures of snow and of the leaves falling and changing color. Makes me miss Pocatello and kind of weird to see those things because it is the same temperature here as when I got here. It is also good to hear about the Jazz getting off to a good start.

Anyways, this week has been a great week for me and Elder Empey. On Monday we taught a part member family. We taught the husband and this is the first time that he has been open to even hearing a lesson from the missionaries, so hopefully his heart can continue to be softened and we can help him find the truth.

On Tuesday, we went on exchanges with K3 again. This time Elder Ngwenya came to K2 with me and Elder Empey went with Elder Anderson. It was a good day with Elder Ngwenya from Zimbabwe. He is a funny guy and a good missionary. There were a few frustrating lessons that day and sometimes it is hard when people just don't understand our message or are caught up on one little thing, but I've learned that Patience isn't a Christ-like attribute for no reason. We need to be patient with others and see them as Heavenly Father and Jesus Christ would see them.

Elder Ngwenya and Elder Beck
Elder Beck and Elder Anderson

On Wednesday, we had our ZDM (Zone Development Meeting). It was good and I learned a lot from all the other missionaries. It is tradition to go to Simba's for a cheeseburger afterwards and it was delicious.

On Thursday, we had a busy day of lessons and we taught Alphonse. He is preparing for baptism on the15th of November. He is almost ready and we have just a few things to cover until he is ready. He is funny guy and has a lot of funny questions. For Example, why we don't baptize the person face first because then they wouldn't have to plug their nose.(ha ha , good point!)  We also finished General Conference that night and watched the last of Sunday Afternoon.

On Friday we had a very busy day. We also had weekly planning and the next transfer looks very bright and looks to be a very good transfer. We have at least one baptism scheduled for every sunday of the transfer except the last. I have the faith that it will happen, but faith without works is dead, so I know that i have to do my part and not just hope for it to happen. On Saturday it was another busy day full of lessons.

Sunday was awesome. We got to church early and as it got closer and closer to 10 it seemed like we were going to have an average attendance, but people just coming in. We ended up with 58 and few more showed up right after sacrament. We almost filled up every seat. We also had a lot of our investigators show up to almost double last week. Then after church we had a rabbit dinner from one of the members. It was really good. Then we committed another investigator to a baptism date. And then we got fed again by another family! It was a really good day. T

Today was the day we got transfer news. It was pretty exciting. I learned that I am staying in K2 branch, but Elder Empey is being transferred back to Uganda to be a Zone leader there. Also the other two in our apartment are going to Uganda also (Elder Ngwenya and Elder Anderson). My new companion will be Elder Wilson. From what I hear, he is a great missionary and he has been out for 13 Transfers or so. He will be the new Zone Leader. There will only by 6 Elders in Rwanda now not 8. Two elders from K1 branch are coming to K3 branch now. So now only 2 Elders in each branch instead of 4 in K1 and 2 in the other branches. Very unexpected. It is sad to know the other 3 Elders in my apartment will leave. Especially Elder Empey because we were going to have a great next transfer. Also, the next two transfers will be combined and there will be no transfer news at 6 weeks because of Christmas. So everyone will be the same for the next 12 weeks. Crazy.

Overall this week has been one of the best so far. Nothing too exciting happened, but me and Elder Empey had a very successful week. We had great numbers and also the branch is getting excited and the branch is finding a lot of people for us to teach which is the best way to do it. It also has been a great transfer. I can't believe is already over. I've learned so much and experienced so much.

One scripture I am ponderizing in this upcoming week is 3 Nephi 7:18. Nephi had so much faith that they could not disbelieve his words. Also a great chapter on Faith is Ether 12. In my scripture study I've been reading in Helaman and I love 3:29 and 4:13. With our own strength we are nothing, but with God we can be great. Alright have a great week and thanks for the emails. I love you.

Typical day for missionaries in Rwanda (Elders Ngwenya, Anderson, Empey)

ANSWERS TO MOM'S QUESTIONS:
1. How's the weather? Do you need anything? Sounds like another good week at home. I definitely miss the cool weather and the leaves and the snow, but it is good here too. I don't need anything, but something that could be nice would be some stain remover stuff.

2. Are there any holidays there? There aren't really any holidays yet other than Umuganda day. Which is every month where everyone does community service and the roads are shut down.

3. How can we be better member missionaries? To be a better missionary as a family would be to never be afraid to share about the gospel. No effort is wasted.

4. What do you find interesting about the people in Africa? The people here are friendly when you talk to them, but when they are driving they are not so nice.   :)

Another week....in Rwanda

Hello! That is awesome about the XC team. They keep on winning. Good to hear. Also I missed Halloween here but celebrated Umaganda day!

On Tuesday we had a pretty normal day and we taught this new guy that has a family of 7 or something and he seems like a really cool guy. He lived in Uganda for awhile and speaks good english, but for some reason he won't let us meet with the rest of his family. Hopefully he does. The weird part aboutTuesday was that Elder Empey and I had to pick up an Elder returning home from Ukraine at 1 in the morning. He seemed like a really good person and hopefully he will help out in the Branch. So we only got like 5 hours of sleep that night. Also I tried making some bread, but we have a small toaster oven thing and it doesn't cook things very well, but at least it was edible.

On Wednesday I was a part of MLC. It is a big meeting with all the zone leaders and APs. Elder Empey was a part of it and I got to listen. It was really good to hear from President and all the other leaders in the mission. I learned a lot. Then Elder Empey and I got to go out to eat at a Chinese restaurant. It was really nice and it was dumping rain that night. It was delicious though.

num num.... chinese food

Chinese, fanta and super speedy chopsticks

On Thursday we did exchanges with K3. Elder Empey went with Elder Ngwenya in K3 and Elder Anderson came with me to K2. I was the senior in the area and I had to kinda take control. It was a good experience. It was also pretty hard. We had a good day. We also had to take the buses into and out of town because Elder Empey has the truck. On Friday, Elder Empey and I did surprise exchanges with K1 elders. We both joined one of the companionships for the most of the day. Then we went back to our area and taught a couple of lessons. We were able to commit one of our investigators to a baptism date on the 15th of November. We have been teaching him for over 2 months or the other elders have and finally he committed to a bapt. date. He has come to church for like 9 straight weeks and he is ready to be baptized. It is exciting!

On Saturday it was Umaganda day! It is the last Saturday of every month and most everyone goes out and does some community service in the morning. We didn't go out because we had to make up our weekly planning. On Umaganda day the whole city shuts down. People don't want to meet, there are not as many people out, the traffic is down. It is kind of weird. The rest of the day was pretty normal though. On Sunday we went to church and had a great service. We only had 46 people there this week, but we had a couple investigators that hadn't come in awhile show up which was really good. Also there were some really good testimonies from the members. We only have 3 or 4 testimonies the entire meeting because everyone takes a long time, but it is really good. Also the singing here isn't very good because no one knows how the songs go or how to sing in English very well. It is kind of funny. We also watched the Sunday Afternoon session on Sunday. Some very good talks. I am going to try and ponderize a scripture every week now. Oh Yeah! Dieudonne and Kellen (say it like Keran because Rwandan's mix there l's and r's) were confirmed. Really cool experience. They are going to be a great family in the branch. Really good week.

It is awesome here in Rwanda. I am getting more comfortable with everything here. I learn so much every week. It has been raining quite a bit since I got here. The work is really exciting. Elder Empey and I hope both of us stay put after transfers, especially him. as we have a really exciting transfer coming up with hopefully around 6+ baptisms.

After reading about Moroni lately I have learned how we can never stop preparing even if we feel we are prepared enough. Prepare and Learn. Also I liked 2 Corinthians 5:6-7 and how we need to walk by faith rather than sight because none of us have a perfect knowledge of everything, but we have the faith that we know enough and that Heavenly Father will take care of the rest after we do all that we can do. Also I have been trying to have the influence of the Holy Ghost more in my life. We have to be obedient and also be looking for and feeling for the Holy Ghost at all times. It has really made a difference in my days. I also learned that I am one of the 50 first missionaries here in Rwanda. 44 or something like that. The church is really young here and also at a really exciting time. Thanks for the prayers and letters. Love you.

ANSWERS TO MOM'S QUESTIONS....
DOES ANYONE TALK ABOUT WHAT HAPPENED IN 1994 IN RWANDA?Here in Rwanda we don't usually directly talk to people about the Genocide. It is to touchy a subject for some people

WHAT DO YOU MISS?
Halloween sounds fun and I miss the candy. I also miss the cool weather. It isn't necessarily really hot here with the rain, but I miss the crisp cool days and nights for sure, but I can't complain too much.

HAVE YOU EATEN ANYTHING STRANGE?
I haven't eaten anything too strange, but I have eaten Matoke. It is cooked green bananas. They remind me of potatoes.

WHERE ARE YOUR SANDALS? I DIDN'T SEE THEM IN YOUR PICTURE? I forgot my sandals that day so don't worry.

WHO DID YOU BAPTIZE AND WHO'S WHO IN THE LAST PHOTOS? I baptized Kellen (sounds like Keran). She is the mother.

WHO IS THE FUN RANDOM GUY IN LAST WEEKS PICTURES? I think you are talking about Kennedy. He is just a member and doesn't speak any English at all. He is really funny guy.

Kennedy?

Kennedy? in the striped shirt

WHAT IS THE CARD GAME ERC? Egyptian Rat Crew or something like that. Ask Eryn or natalie they might now. You try to get all the cards and it is a slapping game.

Thanks as always for the update from home. I love reading It and I love you too.
